LAP-Band Removal

For many patients suffering from obesity, LAP-Band surgery is a bariatric procedure that does not deliver the desired weight loss results. The bariatric surgeons at Panhandle Weight Loss Center in Amarillo, TX, are experienced in helping patients dissatisfied with LAP-Band find weight loss success through revisional bariatric surgery. If you are unhappy and discouraged with your progress after LAP-Band surgery, we can help.

LAP-Band Conversion Surgery

Once a popular weight loss surgery, LAP-Band procedures have steadily decreased due to unsatisfactory weight loss, weight regain, and complications including heartburn, vomiting, nausea, band intolerance, and band slippage. Removing the LAP-Band and undergoing revisional bariatric surgery with a more effective procedure can help patients resolve band-related complications and improve their ability to lose weight.

Candidates for LAP-Band Removal

Candidates for LAP-Band removal are typically individuals who experience one or more of the following common LAP-Band complications:

  • Unsatisfactory weight loss
  • Weight regain
  • Band intolerance
  • Band-related complications

LAP-Band Removal & Conversion Surgery

Many patients who have not experienced optimal weight loss results from LAP-Band surgery desire revisional bariatric surgery. We’re proud to offer improved outcomes with conversion procedures using Gastric Sleeve and Duodenal Switch.

LAP-Band Conversion To Gastric Sleeve

Gastric Sleeve surgery is the most common bariatric procedure performed in the U.S., and involves removing approximately 80% of the stomach to limit food intake and reduces the production of hormones associated with hunger.1

LAP-Band Conversion To Duodenal Switch

Duodenal Switch surgery is a weight loss procedure typically performed on patients who need to lose 100 pounds or more or have a BMI of at least 50 and involves removing a portion of the stomach and bypassing roughly half of the small intestine.

How Is LAP-Band Removal Performed?

LAP-Band removal begins with laparoscopically removing the gastric band, subcutaneous port, and sutures securing it in place, followed by excising any scar tissue.2 Once finished, the surgeon will perform the Gastric Sleeve or Duodenal Switch procedure.

Recovery After LAP-Band Removal & Conversion

Following revisional bariatric surgery, patients are typically mobile within 24 hours and experience minimal pain. We recommend waiting at least one week before returning to work to provide the body with ample time to rest and heal. We advise patients to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for a minimum of 3 weeks following surgery.
